As the COVID-19 pandemic spread to the U.S., consumers began stockpiling essentials, such as canned goods, pasta, frozen food, paper goods and more. By April 7th, more than 95% of the U.S. population was under some form of stay-at-home order and Americans began adjusting to a new normal. Purchase data–collected from InMarket’s credit card/debit card and scanned receipt data–showed strong purchases for indoor and outdoor activities. Such purchases focused on the household, ranging from cleaning products to gardening and DIY activities. Streaming services, exercise equipment, food delivery, and alcohol purchases also rose rapidly as Americans looked to keep fit and entertained while enjoying a meal at home or from one of their favorite local restaurants.
